Before anything, those of us suffering from PTSD need to get help for ourselves. If you are suffering from the symptoms described on this web site or from any other source, please get help immediately.

It’s never too late!

It took me a long time to seek help, I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I was told on the way back from Vietnam just to forget everything. It just didn’t work, I started having PTSD symptoms about 5 years after I got out of the Army, that was 27 years ago. After many years of nightmares, intrusive thoughts of Vietnam, crying for no good reason, drinking and self-medicating, isolation and 4 suicide attempts; I found a person who truly understood my problems. The following is how I found successful treatment:

Vet Centers - I initially went to my local Vet Center for help. Vet Centers are offices containing psychologists who’s clients are veterans of the Armed Forces. To find a vet center closest to you click this link:

My psychologist at the Vet Center helped me get into the VA healthcare system and recommended a service officer to help me file my first claim.

The most important service my Vet Center psychologist helped me with was my enrollment into the VA Healthcare System. The doctors, social workers, therapists and nurses at the VA Hospitals where I received treatment were very caring, compassionate and professional. I can’t stress enough the importance of the Vet Centers, my psychologist bent over backwards to help with eligibility and enrollment into my local VA hospital. All I had to do was fill out and sign the “Application for Medical Benefits (VA Form 10-10EZ)”. If you are suffering from any medical condition and you are a veteran of the Armed Forces, please find the Vet Center nearest to you and talk to one of the counselors there.
